Jeff:

I think you're missing the point: the Jewish believers were free to continue observing certain practices if they chose (such as Paul placing himself under a vow) but neither Jews nor Gentiles were obligated to keep the ceremonial laws. There was no need to be satisfied with the shadows once the substance had arrived.

Let's say I'm a Gentile believer (which I am) but I don't drink alcohol because it troubles my conscience, having had an alcoholic and abusive father. My Christian friends, Gentile or Jew, do drink. Now, I'm free to drink or not drink, as are they. That's not two sets of rules, just two sets of practices.

If I refuse to associate with them because they drink, that's another matter: I do not have the right to refuse their company because they engage in an allowed practice and I don't.

I don't see any problem, compromise, or conflict and find great strength and flexibility is such a foundation.

So the answer to the apparent conflict of the different scriptures is that James and the disciples were compromising their principals to convert gentiles? Does that mean that they set one rule for Jewish believers and one for gentile believers. Doesn't sound like a strong foundation for the start of a religion.
